Cubase VST was digital audio workstation (DAW) developed by Steinberg for music and MIDI recording, arranging and editing in 1996. It introduced the concept of VST plugin effects from Cubase’s audio tracks which played through the Mac’s audio output or to third party audio interfaces including Digidesign and MOTU interfaces. VST24 3.7 was the first sequencer ever to support VST instrument plugin format, as Steinberg had invented the "VSTi" specification to incorporate into third-party products. In 2002 Steinberg dropped the "VST" part of the product name with Cubase SX since all versions of Cubase included the VST technology.
