Tom Oberheim SEM Pro

The Tom Oberheim SEM Pro is a two oscillator monophonic sound module. It is a re-issue of the original Oberheim SEM (Synthesizer Expander Module) from 1974 but with up to date features such as midi control and additional patch points including the ability to filter external sounds. The design of the original SEM, with its legendary multimode filter section (2-pole (12dB/oct) and detunable oscillators, went on to be incorporated into the legendary keyboard synths, the Oberheim Two Voice, Four Voice, and Eight Voice (which contains 2, 4, or 8 SEM-style modules). It includes midi to CV/gate converter for controlling additional synths and a CV/gate input for each of the two oscillators. Each oscillator can consist of variable amount of sawtooth or pulse. The LFO can modulate the oscillators pitch, pulse width, and filter.

Various incarnation of the SEM have been used in recordings by Drokk (Geoff Barrow of Portishead with and film composer Ben Salisbury), 808 State, Depeche Mode, Herbie Hancock, Styx, Rush, Jan Hammer, Pink Floyd, The Shamen, Joe Zawinul, John Carpenter, Vince Clarke (Erasure, Yazoo), Gary Wright ("Dream Weaver") and Vangelis.
