Tape Baking
Older ¼" (quarter inch), ½" (half inch), 1 inch, and 2 inch tapes including AMPEX/Quantegy from the 70's to the 90's and 3M/Scotch "Master" grade of tapes are unfortunately prone to "sticky shed" syndrome, due to the breakdown of the binder (glue) over time that holds the oxide particles on the tape.
Baking is sometimes required before transferring the tape to the digital domain.
We have mastered the process of treating and rescuing these tapes suffering from severe sticky shed by baking them at a precise temperature and duration. Consumer grade 3M/Scotch which have an acetate formula and are silicon lubricated do not have this issues and should not be baked but the professional formulas that may have sticky shed and will require baking.
